A good hotel dispenser protects the product first: nothing from outside, neither water nor bacteria, should find its way back into the bottle. It then empties completely, cannot be removed or opened by the guest, changes in a few seconds and looks right in your bathroom. All of these depend on how the dispenser is built, not on the cosmetic inside it.

Below we explain how each ADA Cosmetics system works, what research shows about contamination, and how to choose by hotel category.

What makes a hotel dispenser good?

For the guest, a dispenser is a two-second gesture. For the hotel, it is a piece of equipment that stays on the wall for months, in the dampest room of the building, touched by every guest. The criteria, in order of importance:

  1. Product safety and guest hygiene. The product must leave the bottle without anything else getting in.
  2. A closed system. The bottle is sealed at the factory and never opened in the room.
  3. Complete emptying. Whatever is left in the bottle at changeover is product paid for and thrown away.
  4. Theft and tamper protection. The bottle cannot be removed without a key or the release mechanism.
  5. Simple housekeeping. The change must be quick and need no tools.
  6. Appearance. The bracket and bottle are part of the bathroom design.

In Romania, soap or a liquid-soap dispenser is a minimum classification criterion at every hotel category, from 1 to 5 stars. Details in our article on mandatory amenities.

How does a dispenser work, and where does contamination happen?

There are two basic principles. A pump dispenser draws the product through a mechanism that stays open to the outside. A pressure (or membrane) dispenser releases the product when the guest presses the bottle, with no pump.

The difference matters. Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Germany examined 104 dispensers taken from hotel rooms: 57 refillable pump dispensers and 47 non-refillable pressure dispensers. In 38 of the 57 pump dispensers (67%), the product was heavily contaminated with Gram-negative bacteria. No product contamination was found in the pressure dispensers.

The most useful conclusion for a hotelier: refilling itself was not the cause, under minimum hygiene conditions. The problem was the pump head. Water from the shower or basin stays there, a biofilm forms, and bacteria move down into the product. With conventional pumps, contamination rises significantly after about 20 days of use. The study was published in MicrobiologyOpen in 2023 and was commissioned by ADA Cosmetics.

Which technologies does ADA use in its dispensers?

press + wash: the first ADA system

press + wash dispenser mounted on the wall above the washbasin

Launched in 1990, press + wash has no pump. The product comes out through a patented, drip-free valve, and the closed bottle empties up to 100%. According to ADA's 2021 system presentation, one cartridge replaces 20–25 individual items per month, per room and per product, and the bottle changes in five seconds. Capacities: 300 and 330 ml. press + wash

SmartCare: the membrane

SmartCare dispenser with Lalique amenities on the bathroom wall

Launched in 2012, SmartCare also works without a pump, using a patented membrane: the product comes out when pressed and nothing returns into the bottle. The Safe Lock closure stops the bottle being opened, and mounting is theft-proof. In September 2026, SmartCare Soft-Touch scored 18 out of 20 in Interzero's independent "Made for Recycling" assessment. 300 ml bottle, on a single, double or triple bracket. SHAPE: the hygienic pump

SHAPE pump dispenser mounted next to the washbasin tap

SHAPE does have a pump, but one designed around the problem the study identified. The hygienic pump and the drainage system are patented: water drains away rather than standing, and air and liquid travel separately, so biofilm has nowhere to form. The whole pump, interior parts included, is polypropylene, so it recycles as a single material. 300 ml bottle. SHAPE · SHAPE MINI

Pump Dispenser: the larger bottles

Pump Dispenser uses the same mono-material pump logic, with every part in the same material, proven against back contamination according to ADA. It comes in 300 and 500 ml bottles, on tamper-proof brackets. Luxury lines from the ADA portfolio, Penhaligon's for example, come in Pump Dispenser. Pump Dispenser

Refillution: controlled refilling

ADA Refillution station filling a dispenser bottle

Refillution is not a dispenser but a patented automated refill system, presented by ADA in October 2024. Bottles are refilled from a 10 l SmartCube, and one cube replaces 34 dispenser bottles of 300 ml. Each bottle carries a Data Matrix code, read automatically during refilling, so the product reaches only the dispenser it is meant for. The system is TÜV SÜD certified to ISO 22716 (good manufacturing practice for cosmetics). Refillution · Refill

A short history of ADA dispensers

ADA Cosmetics was founded in 1979 and is based in Kehl, Germany. It has made hotel amenities for more than 40 years. Its first dispenser system, press + wash, appeared in 1990, followed by SmartCare, with closed membrane dispensers, in 2012. Refillution was presented in 2024, and the mono-material hygienic pump with patented drainage was shown to hoteliers in 2025. Concept Hotels has worked with ADA since 2004.

How to choose by type of property

City hotel, 3 stars. Cost per night and housekeeping time matter most. SmartCare or press + wash, no pump, with an All-in-One wash gel or separate shampoo and shower gel. A double bracket in the shower (shampoo and shower gel) and a soap dispenser at the basin cover the 3-star classification requirements.

4-star hotel. Guests notice the bathroom design. SHAPE on its invisible bracket, or SmartCare in black or matte chrome, with a Beauty & Wellness line. For larger hotels, Refillution, which runs on a contract basis, is worth discussing.

5-star hotel. Pump Dispenser 500 ml on a stainless-steel bracket, with a luxury brand. The large bottle is changed rarely, and the mono-material pump answers the hygiene question.

Guesthouse. Cosmetics are not a minimum criterion for guesthouses, but guests mention them in reviews. press + wash or SmartCare MINI, with a single hair and body product.

Spa and wellness. High consumption, wet hands, products shared by many people. SmartCare (no pump) or SHAPE (with drainage), with frequent bottle changes. Most systems are explained on hotel dispensers.

Where to mount the dispenser, and how to look after it

Mount the dispenser on a flat surface, at shoulder height, where the guest finds it without searching: in the shower, on the wall opposite the jet, and next to the basin for hand soap. Avoid corners where water pools on the bracket. In small shower cubicles, a double or triple bracket keeps every product in one place.

When cleaning, wipe the bracket and the dispenser head with a damp cloth, without acidic, corrosive or chlorine-based cleaners, which can damage the finish. Do not open the bottle or top it up. When the product runs out, the whole bottle is replaced, and housekeeping checks the level at every clean, not only at check-out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the membrane in a SmartCare dispenser?

It is a membrane patented by ADA that lets the product out only when the bottle is pressed. Product comes out, but nothing returns into the bottle, so bathroom water and bacteria stay outside. According to ADA, the membrane does not drip and does not wear out.

Where should the dispenser be mounted in the bathroom?

In the shower, at shoulder height, on a wall the jet does not hit directly, and next to the basin for hand soap. The bracket is fixed to a flat surface; use a double or triple bracket where you offer several products.

How is the dispenser cleaned?

Wipe the bracket with a damp cloth during the daily bathroom clean, without acidic, corrosive or chlorine-based cleaners. The bottle is replaced or refilled only once it is completely empty, following the refill instructions.

Can a different product be put in the dispenser?

Only the product named on the bottle's label. SmartCare, SHAPE and Pump Dispenser can be refilled from 1, 3 and 5 l refills, using the refill instructions supplied with the refill. In a hotel, responsibility for the product in the dispenser lies with the hotel as the service provider, so refilling should follow a written procedure. For large hotels there is controlled refilling through Refillution, which checks automatically, via the Data Matrix code, which product goes into each bottle.

Are pump dispensers unsafe?

Not all of them. The Rhine-Waal study found contamination in conventional pumps, where water stands in the head. SHAPE and Pump Dispenser pumps are built with drainage, so water does not stay in the mechanism.

What happens to small cosmetics bottles from 2030?

From 1 January 2030, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging (PPWR) bans single-use packaging for cosmetics intended for a single stay in accommodation. Refillable dispensers are the alternative. Details in our article on PPWR and hotels.

How long does a bottle change take?

For SmartCare and press + wash, ADA states five seconds. No tools are needed, only the key or the bracket's release mechanism.

Can I test the systems before ordering?
