Compressor, thermoelectric or absorption: choosing a hotel minibar's cooling technology
The real difference between compressor, thermoelectric and absorption minibars — consumption, noise, and where each technology fits in a hotel.
On a spec sheet, "compressor", "thermoelectric" and "absorption" are just one line. In practice they are three different ways of moving heat out of an enclosed space, each with direct consequences for consumption, noise, and where it belongs in a hotel project.
Compressor technology powers the K Ecosmart range: a high-performance compressor, cyclopentane insulation and R600a refrigerant gas (chlorine-free, so no ozone impact) — the most efficient option, between 0.134 and 0.216 kWh/24h depending on the model, and also the quietest of the active technologies.
Thermoelectric cooling, used in the Drink T Plus and Breeze ranges, runs on the Peltier effect: no compressor, so no vibration and no internal or external fans. An epoxy-resin seal ensures a long service life. Consumption is higher (0.263-0.647 kWh/24h), but the light weight and vibration-free operation make Breeze — the lightest minibar in the range — the recommended choice for cruise ships.
Absorption, the traditional water-ammonia refrigeration technology, has been fully phased out by Indel B for the European market and replaced with lower-impact refrigerant gas; it remains available only for non-EU markets (the Iceberg and Drink Plus models).
A compressor minibar's purchase is fully amortised by energy savings in just 6 months, against the average EU energy cost (September 2023) used by Indel B for the calculation — which reframes the choice from "cheapest to buy" to "which technology fits this room."
