What a hotel minibar costs to run in Romania each year
The yearly running cost of a hotel minibar at Romania's real business electricity price. Compressor, thermoelectric and absorption, side by side.
A minibar stays plugged in all year, and on the hotel's bill it is multiplied by the number of rooms. The maths is simple: consumption from the data sheet (kWh per 24 hours) × 365 days × the electricity price.
Business electricity prices in Romania. For the second half of 2025, excluding VAT, Eurostat gives 0.2142 €/kWh for businesses using 20–499 MWh a year and 0.1887 €/kWh at 500–1,999 MWh. The EU averages are 0.2179 and 0.1837 €/kWh. In other words, business electricity in Romania costs about the EU average; it is not a cost advantage. The calculations below use 0.20 €/kWh, the same figure as on the minibars page.

What the table shows. For 50 rooms, moving from an old absorption minibar to a K40 Ecosmart saves roughly 1,600 to 3,900 € a year on electricity alone, every year it runs. A glass door adds about 2 € per minibar per year — worth it where minibar sales matter. Thermoelectric models sit in between: completely silent, but using two to three times as much as a compressor.
What the figures leave out. The Ecosmart system can cut consumption further when the room is empty (Smart Mode, linked to the room's energy saver or building automation, and Eco Mode); the figures above are the data-sheet values without those savings. They also leave out the heat released into the room, which air conditioning removes in summer, and the price of the minibar itself: the payback period depends on the purchase price and on what you replace, so we calculate it on the actual quote.
